As you raise your new pet, there are a few things you shouldn’t do with a puppy that are worth mentioning. While it can be stressful to raise and train a puppy, you should always be sure you’re never hindering your puppy’s training and confidence.

Therefore, you should never be negative while training, never give your puppy too much freedom too soon, never only focus on potty training and dismiss other training, and you should never lack a puppy routine. Keep reading to learn why you should never do these things!

4 Things You Shouldn’t Do With a Puppy

1. Don’t Be Negative When Training

When you’re training your puppy, you should always steer clear of being negative, yelling at, or scolding your puppy. This can have the opposite effect on a puppy while they’re learning something new. Instead, stay positive and calm!

2. Don’t Give Your Puppy Too Much Freedom Too Soon

You should also not give your puppy too much freedom in your house too soon. This can lead to destruction, regression of some training habits such as potty training, and more. Puppies do well with structure, and they do well with only having a portion of the house they can access at first.

Crate training works wonders when puppies are very young. You may also find that penning them off in a certain area of the house, such as a small room, also helps! As they grow up and learn more — and have more self-restraint — you can give them access to other parts of the house!

3. Don’t Just Focus on Potty Training

Potty training is obviously vitally important. You’ll want to start training your dog to go to the bathroom outside as soon as possible. But often, owners believe that they can’t start training their dog in anything else during this potty training process.

This actually isn’t true! Your puppy can learn other skills — such as how to sit, not to jump up on things, etc — when they’re very young and while they’re still learning to only go potty outside. Therefore, start training your puppy in a variety of things young to help to learn faster!

4. Don’t Be Inconsistent

Puppies need routines. So, try not to be inconsistent when it comes to their daily life. Puppies can really thrive on schedules and routines that daily focus on stimulating them mentally and physically!

For example, feed your puppy around the same time every day. Go on a walk around the same time daily, too!

Q: What are the seven basic dog commands?

A: When training your puppy, you should start teaching them the seven basic dog commands first: sit, down, stay, heel, come, no, and off.
